New Skills

We attended a Stake choir concert last Saturday in the new huge LDS church downtown. The choir consisted of only 30 members, but the sound they produced was beautiful and HUGE--the rafters were ringing!

 For me, everything is new.  I have to learn all the intricacies of locks, old and new, to get into our gate, our front door, out our back door, into our office--it must be locked even when we go to the kitchenette around the corner to eat lunch.  The bar across the entrance to our complex is lowered every night with a guard at each end.  I have to learn how to operated all the gadgets and appliances that came with our place--thanks to a neighbor for saving us during a few small crises.  They don't work the same as ours, for the most part.  Which leads into what is new for Sr. Florine.  This last week she learned for the first time:  how to start to use a computer; how to use a washing machine and dryer; how to use a toaster (she was so excited when the toast popped up all by itself!); how to use a shower curtain so water doesn't pour all over the floor; how to use a microwave--well, it was actually the third time she had used one; how to use an oven; how to use a steam iron.  And we haven't even opened some of the kitchen gadgets...She says that she is being "modernised," and can't wait to tell her daughters.  Which really goes to show that while these things ( which we completely take for granted) are helpful, one can survive without them.
